A recent lawsuit against our neighbor, Sunnyvale School District (Taylor v. Sunnyvale, June 2026), put a national question on our doorstep: when can parents opt their children out of LGBTQ+-inclusive lessons on religious grounds? It sits between the U.S. Supreme Court’s Mahmoud v. Taylor (June 2025), which recognized a parental right to notice and opt-out, and California law, which directs districts to teach an inclusive curriculum.
Here’s where CUSD stands: unlike Sunnyvale, we currently allow religious opt-outs. But for 2026-27, the district changed one practice — parents must now request in advance to be notified when teachers use supplemental materials (previously the whole class was notified). That’s the notice a parent needs in order to opt out.
